You can see now that there was someone in the way. It was the Professor. And he was so deeply engrossed in his meditations that he did not hear their frantic shouts. Of course, the poor Professor did not know what happened to him. Fortunately he gave a jump at the right moment, with his legs sticking out. And the chums were travelling so rapidly that they went right underneath, before he came down. They all had to bob their heads, but they did that all right, and on they went.
As you know, everything must come to an end. And this is where the chum’s adventure came to an end. Fortunately for them it was a very soft end, for they finished in the ditch at the bottom of the lane, and the ditch was filled with nice soft mud. You can see what happened to the Professor. He lay on his back with his legs in the air for quite a time before he realised that the world had not turned upside down. As for the chums, well, you may guess what they looked like when they crawled out of the mud. Perhaps it was lucky that Gwen’s mouth was so full of mud that she could not express her opinion. Somehow I do not think the sledge on wheels will become a very popular toy.
