CROQUET

NELSON CLUB

The 1937-38 season of the Nelson Croquet Club was brought to a close before a good attendance of members and the weather being beautifully fine a number of competitions were keenly contested. After tea was dispensed Mrs Dalglish. the president, referred to the happy times spent on the lawns in past years and said she was sure there were mixed feelings among the older members of the club as this closing day was to be the last on these lawns. Mrs Dalglish thanked the captain, Miss Rees, Mrs Hamilton, the secretary (Mrs Lee) and the committee for their assistance during the season and then presented the prizes to the following winners:— Ladies championship, Mrs Lee; run-ner-up, Mrs St. John. A Championship, Mrs Hamilton; run-ner-up, Mrs Lee. B. Championship, Mrs Everett; run-ner-up, Mrs Burke. C Championship. Mrs Houlker. Newstead Cup, Mrs Hamilton; run-ner-up, Mrs Lee. Mrs Waters’s Cup, Mrs St. John; run-ner-up, Mrs Hamilton. C. Yankee Tournament, Mrs Bowden. Mrs Brice’s prize, Mesdames Hamilton and Fantham. A hearty vote of thanks with musical honours was then accorded Mrs Dalglish. The president of the association, Col. Hume, presented the Nelson Croquet Club with the President’s Cup for winning the A doubles and Mesdames Brice and Burke for the association B doubles matches. Col. Hume also gave a very instructive and encouraging talk on how croquet should be played and kindly r ffered any assistance if required. The winners of the competitions played during the afternoon were as follows:—Angles, Mrs Hume. To and fro, Miss Dickson. Target, Mrs Lemmer. Quoits, Mrs Cresswell and Miss Dickson Darts, Mrs C. Milner. Hurry scurry, Mesdames Hume and St. John. An apology was received from Mrs Sclanders who could not be present on account of indisposition at which regret was expressed.
