CURRENT ATTRACTIONS 3500 VISIT "MAYTIME’’ AT MAJESTIC IN FIRST TWO DAYS Exceptional houses have been the vogue at the Majestic for “Maytime” and plans over the season presage a new and greater Majestic record. It is an uncommonly charming and absorbing film. It gives those popular singers Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy parts which show them in their most graceful aspects. Altogether. "Maytime” has brought into being such a galaxy of delights that one scarcely knows how to begin discussing it The test of the picture's excellence is the fact that it runs for two and a quarter hours without creating the slightest symptom of fatigue. In the film Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have combined gaiety, beauty and sepia toning which is the studio’s answer to the call for colour. This tone gives exquisite depth and softness. Intending patrons are strongly advised to reserve as plans for the entire season are moving rapidly.
The next Majestic attraction commences on Saturday next at 2 p.m with the two Academy Award winners Luise Rainer and Spencer Tracey in yet another Mctro-Go’dwyn-Mayer attraction—“ Big City ** Th* story deals with the fortunes of an immigrant girl who battles her way to success in America and to love via marriage to a New York taxicab driver The part of the immigrant girl provides another unusual role for the versatile Miss Rainer whose screen portrayals range from the Chinese heroine of "The Good Earth” to the Russian ccunless of “The Emperor’s Candlesticks.” As the tough, but good natured taxicab driver. Tracy plays his first role since his hit parts in "Captains Courageous” and ’They Gave Him a Gun.” Also prominent in the cast are Charley Grapewin. Janet Beecher and Eddie Quillan. Plans for the season are now open.
REGENT. TO-NIGHT, GUEST NIGHT: "STORM OVER THE ANDES. ’ AND "LOVE BEFORE BREAKFAST.”
“Storm Over the Andes,” featuring Jack Holt and Mona Barrie, is an exciting story of an ace flyer who sells his services to a foreign nation involved in warfare. Included in the supporting , cast are Grant Withers and Antonio : Moreno. The associate feature. "Love ; Before Breakfast.” with Carole Lombard and Preston Foster in the leading i roles, is a brilliant comedy revealing a modern young lady who demands the right to her own opinions, even when they include the desire to marry two young men. The fun begins when one of her suitors gives her a black eye accidentally. From that point, every time he tries to win her favour, he does something else which stirs her wrath more. Her spoken lines snap like a whip, crackling like static in a lightning storm. The smart dialogue in "Love Before Breakfast” grows naturally from the humorous situations. The climax of the laughs is heightened by happenings during a storm at sea. Patrons are again reminded that it is guest night and that there are no reserves.
STATE LAST NIGHT “UNDER THE RED ROBE." TO MORROW AT 2 P.M. A GREAT VARIETY PROGRAMME.
1 Another large l ouse last night was highly entertained by the remarkable ! "Under the Red Robe" starring Annabella and Conrad Veidt. Patrons are 1 reminded that the final screening of this picture takes place to-night. To-morrow the management will offer to the public what is claimed to be one ol the finest variety programmes ever presented. The attraction is the non-stop revue show “She Shall Have Music.” featuring Jack Hylton and his band the world-famous dance orchestra Included in the acts are various artists of stage, screen and radio and it promises to be a picture of real high-class entertainment. Attraction No. 2 is the film of the famous FarrBraddock fight in which the latter makes a sensational comeback and becomes again a contender for the world's title. Farr claims he won eight of the ten rounds fought and patrons can judge for themselves just how right this is Attraction No. 2 is h surprise comedy hit "Woman Wise’’ which features two popular stars in Michael Whalen and Rochelle Hudson Altogether the programme is one ot supreme interest and should appeal to discriminating theatre-goers.
