NELSON DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB RIFLEMAN P. C. COOTE TOP SCORES The Nelson Defence Rifle Club rei sumed its programme on Saturday with ; a shoot over 800 and 900 yards ranges. The trophies competed for were the Wastney Cup, Telescope Trophy, Snodgrass and Sons’ Trophy and Mr F. G. j Gledhill's Trophy. A fairly strong south-west wind was troublesome at times but some good scores were registered in spite of this. The light was extremely bad owing to the lateness in the season and consequently sighting was very difficult. Top scorer for the day was Rifleman P. C. Coote who scored 49 and 47, a brilliant effort for this young competitor. The veteran marksman F. G. Gledhill also scored 49 and 47 but was counted out by Rifleman Coote. P. C. Coote takes the leg-in for Messrs Snodgrass and Sons Trophy and secures , 5 points for the Wastney Cup. Others! who take points for the Wastney Cup are, F. G. Gledhill, C. G. Batchelor, R. N. Inwood and R. Mellett. Next Saturday, 7th May, a competition will be fired over 500 and 600 yards for the same trophies. The leaders for the Wastney Cup are: | R. Catley 16 points, P. Coote 10. W. Mitchener and W. Kenning 9, F. Gled-! hill 8. H. Day 7, C. G. Batchelor 6, K. Inwood and P. S. McLaren 5. A visitor to the range this week was R. Taylor, of Waipukurau, who scored 46 and 42. a creditable performance for his first shoot.

DEFENCE MINIATURE CLUB The Nelson Defence Miniature Rifle Club opened the 1938 season last Thursday night with a seven shot match to be followed by a match between teams selected by the president and vicepresident. Good scores in the first shoot were made by R. Coote, R. Inwood and H. Day who scored 67 each. The teams’ match resulted in a win for the vicepresident’s team by nine points.
