TWO NEW LIFE MEMBERS

NELSON RUGBY UNION HONOURS MESSRS H. PAPPS AND G. JOHNSON Mr H. Papps. of Richmond, and Mr G. Johnson, of Nelson, were elected as life members of the Nelson Rugby Union last night. Mr Papps commenced his Rugby football career in the third class team of the Richmand Stars in 1891. He joined the original Waimea juniors in 1894, being one of the foundation members of the club. He was a senior player for the Prince Albert team from 1897 until the dissolution of the club, and he played one season for the Nelson Club in 1903. In 1904 he rejoined the revived Waimea Club for two years before transferring to the Motueka district, where he played for the Kia Ora Club, Riwaka. and Huia Clubs. Mr Papps helped in the formation of the Motueka sub-union and Referees' Association, and he served as a referee in Motueka until 1914 when he returned to Nelson. He was a member of the Nelson Rugby Union Management Committee under the presidency of Mr R. W. Stiles and Mr J. G. McKay. Sole junior selector in 1916, at a later date he was one of the three senior selectors with Messrs J. G. McKay and W. Watson. In addition Mr Papps has been continuously connected with the Waimea Club as a member of the committee, vice-president, and president for a number of years. Mr G. Johnson was a player in Nelson Union teams for many years, and later gave years of service on the Nelson Referees’ Association. However. Mr Johnson’s greatest service to the game was given during the fifteen years that he was voluntary ambulance officer for the union, prior to the activities in Nelson of the St. John Ambulance Association. Mr Johnson, season after season, rendered an invaluable service, and the union was fortunate in having such a highly skilled first aid officer available. His prompt attention to injuries and kindness will long be remembered by hundreds of Nelson Rugby players who will join in congratulating him on the honour which the Union has conferred on him.
