THOUSANDS WANTING TO ESCAPE I United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copy rightl (Received 30th March, 9.0 a.m.) PRAGUE, 29th March. The British correspondent, Mr G. E. R. Gedge, who has again been notified of his expulsion from Austria, statde that Austria had become a prison from which hundreds of thousands wanted l to escape but could not. “Except from the Nazis, I have received envious congratulations lather than condolences,” he said. “Nevertheless it is one thing to want to leave Austria and another to get away, as a police permit is necessary to leave the : country.” ARCHDUKE IN CONCENTRATION CAMP (Received 30th March, 10.0 a.m.) VIENNA, 29th March. Archduke Josef Ferdinand was placed in a concentration camp. OUSTING JEWISH BUSINESSMEN FIRST STEP TAKEN (Received 30th March, 2 p.m.) VIENNA, 29th March. The first step toward ousting Jewish businessmen, shopkeepers and industrialists is announced, a decree by Dr Inquart providing for the installation of administrators in all undertakings whose owner has Hed or where there is risk of money and goods being removed or where there is any other important reason for this course. There is no intention of compensation to owners. Another decree destricts the number I of Jewish students at the university. QUESTION OF PROTECTION [British Official Wirelessl RUGBY, 28th March. Asked in the House of Commons j whether he interred to propose to the League Council that Austrian refugees be placed under the League’s protection, the Prime Minister, Mr Chamberlain, said the British Government was giving consideration to this question, the importance of which was fully appreciated He was not yet in a position to make a statement.
