BOMBARDMENT OF BARCELONA
REPLY TO BRITISH REPRESENTATIONS GENERAL FRANCO’S ASSURANCES I British Official Wire I ere (Received 29th March, 10.2 a.m.) RUGBY, 28th March. A reply to the British representations to the Spanish Nationalist authorities following the recent bombardment of Barcelona has now been received. While recognising that the British initiative was inspired by purely humanitarian motives and expressing sorrow for the loss of innocent lives, General Franco denies that the civil population has been the object of deliberate attack and alleges that Barcelona constitutes a military objective of great importance owing to its munition factories and military stores. General Franco says he will continue to endeavour to restrict the effects of aerial activity in populous towns, and will only employ these means when imperious military necessities gave no alternative.
