FAREWELL TO MR J. E. HUME The Hills Fruit growers’ Union and ' Tasman Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union combined on Saturday even- ‘ mg to tender a farewell to Mr J. E.‘ Hume, ; who has managed a large commercial orchard at Tasman for the past, 9 years. ; and is now leaving the district'to take u,: - an appointment under the department ol Agriculture at Auckland. Mr J. A. Fraser, who presided, expressed regret that the Farmers’ Union was los mg the services of an energetic.and enthusiastic chairman, and the Hills’ Unior one of the "live wires'’ of its executive committee. Other speakers included Messrs J, , Dicker, (i. W. Darrell, L. R. Robinson: I liawley. H. E. Stephens, J. H. Brunt, V. r Austin and F. E. Nottage, each of whoir . dealt with the ability and energy-display j ed by the guest of the evening in tin many spheres in which he had taken ai interest during his lengthy residence ir ' Tasman. Mr Hume had been an active meinbei • and efficient chairman of the Farmers ’ Union, a member of the executive, and.Do ■ minion Confeience delegate for the Hilh ' Fruitgrowers’ Union, member of the Mo 1 tueka Caledonian Society, Tasman Rifh (.’lull, and convener of the Fruitgrowers ; and Farmers Transport Committee, in ad : dition to his duties as an orchard nianag I er, and he was held in the highest esteen . as a kindly and generous neighbour always ready and willing to assist anj . worthy cause. While congratulating Mi Hume on his appointment members ex pressed the hope that progress and pro n otion would, in due course, be available ’ to him. 5 Mr Fraser, on behalf of those presen! made a small presentation to Mr and Mr; f Hume and family and wished them al - that is best and brightest' in the days - that lie ahead. ? Mr Hurtle replied, acknowledging tin kindness, help and encouragement lie hat ; received from neighbours and friends ii _ Tasman, and assuring them that lie woulc _ endeavour to serve them faithfully in hi: new' position. 3 Light refreshments and the singing o “For He's a Jolly Good Fellow” anc “Auld Lang Syne” concluded a happj ’ function. Two other Tasman men, Mr aHstings Grace, and Mr H. C. A. Wards, have als( secured positions in the Fruit Inspeetioi s Branch of the Department of Agriculture i and have taken up their duties at Welling ton and Tiinaru respectively.
