EXPORT FRUIT

SPACE FOR 1,071,651 CASES APPLIED FOR SHIPPING ALLOCATIONS FOR 992,796 CASES RECORD DIRECT SHIPMENTS THIS SEASON Applications by fruit growers in the Nelson district for export fruit space on overseas vessels now total 1,071,651 cases, but the Fruit Board has been successful in obtaining shipping space only to cover all export space applications up to the 4th March. This means that the export from Nelson district will be i under the million cases, unless other districts cancel space, which can then be filled by Nelson. .Applications for additional space , have been received for 78.855 cases i which cannot be exported unless cancellations are received from other districts. As the season progresses it is evident that had unlimited shipping space been available and n 6 quota restrictions enforced, Nelson would have eclipsed the 1934 record of 1.008,570 cases by about 100.000 cases. SPACE APPLICATIONS TO 4th MARCH The following are the Nelson space applications to the 4th March, for which

FRUIT RECEIVED TO DATE Fruit received from the orchards for inspection to date this season totals 510.804 cases, compared with 420.335 to the same date in the record season of 1934. an increase of 90.467 cases. Details of the fruit received from the various districts compared with 1934 are as follows:

JONATHAN VARIETY The second Jonathan pool closed at Mapua on the 21st March, and at Nelson and Motueka on the 25th March. Subject to maturity the 3rd pool closes at Mapua on the 28th March and at Nelson and Motueka on the 2nd April. In the second pool there was a total of 103,608 cases—Nelson 36,729, Mapua 41,777, Motueka 25,102. DIRECT LOADINGS AT NELSON The Mahana is in port at present to load 34.500 cases of fruit for Hook of Holland and Dunkirk. The Port Chalmers is due on Wednesday next to take 52,000 cases (20,000 cases of apples for , Hamburg, 20,000 cases of apples for London and 12,000 cases of pears for London). Two extra vessels, the Port Dunedin and the Coptic have been allotted for direct loading at Nelson and during the next few weeks the Nelson wharves will be taxed to their utmost in dealing with the large fruit ship- ; ments and Inward cargo. The Port ! Dunedin will arrive on the 11th April i for 100.000 rases (70,000 for London and 30.000 for Monte Video) and on the j 22nd April the Coptic will commence ! loading 44.000 cases for London. When the above mentioned four j direct loadings totalling 230,500 j cases are completed, in addition to the recent direct shipment of 36.981 i cases by the Port Alma, a new record of 267.481 cases will be established. The largest amount pre- ! viously loaded direct at Nelson was 250.871 cases in 1934.
