CONQUEST OF ETHIOPIA
RECOGNITION OF ITALY PROPOSAL OF DUTCH GOVERNMENT QUESTIONS IN THE HOUSE O' COMMONS [British Official Wireless] (Received 10th February, 11.35 a.m.) RUGBY, 9th February. The Foreign Secretary, Mr Anthony Eden, was asked in the House of Commons whether he was aware of the recent proposal made by the Dutch Government to the three Scandinavian Governments that they should join Britain and France in recognising the Italian conquest of Ethiopia and whether the Dutch Government acted with the approval and authority of Britain? Mr Eden replied that before taking any fin;* step in the matter the Netherlands Government intended to consult (he British and French Governments. The initiative in the matter recognition lay exclusively with The Netherlands; and the reply to the second part of the question was in the negative. However, the Netherlands Government had informed Britain of the initiative it had taken in the matter.
