BIRTHDAY GREETINGS

CONVEYED TO DOMINION NEW ZEALAND SOCIETY’S BANQUET IN LONDON TRIBUTE TO HIGH COMMISSIONER [United Press Association—Bv Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 9th February. On behalf of the British Government, the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, Mr Malcolm MacDonald, asked the High Commissioner, Mr W. J. Jordan, to convey ninety-eighth birthday greetings to New Zealand at the New Zealand Society’s commemorative banquet at the Savoy Hotel. He added that in terms of man’s age the Dominion was in its dotage but a visitor to the League of Nations Council, on hearing Mr Jordan, would know that not only the experience and wisdom of age but the enterprise and fire of youth were in the Dominion s participation in world affairs. Mr Jordan was playing a distinguished part in building up a young nation and advancing the welfare of the Empire. Mr Hal Williams, on behalf of the society, said that Mr Jordan’s career was one of democracy’s romances. He ani his wife, because of their friend’iness and sincerity, had endeared themselves to London, carrying out their mission with dignity and ability. Mr Jordan, after reading a greeting from the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, outlined trade figures indicating New Zealand’s prosperity. He said: “New Zealand owes a lot t' London, but whatever the amount, it is quite safe." Distinguished guests included the Earl of Liverpool: Sir Harry Tyford, Lord Mayor; Count Van Limbe r g, Netherlands' Minister: Mr Dulantv. Trish Free State Minister; Admiral of the Fleet Lord Chatfield. First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff: Sir James Parr (an ex-High Commissioner!; Air Chief Marshal Sir Cyril Newall; Sir Firoz Khan noon; Sir Fabiar. Ware: ml Sir Edward Harding.

A New Zealand Day service, held in the afternoon at St Lawrence Jewry Church, was conducted by the Rev. A, Lombard ini. A reception at Girdler s Hall followed.
