CAUGHT IN TUNNEL
WORKERS ON JIGGER TRAIN COMES UNEXPECTEDLY ONE INJURED IN CONFUSION Caught in a tunnel in the Manawatu Gorge, a small party of men travel- ; ling by a jigger had a miraculous escape late the other afternoon. One of the party, Mr N. Hendrichson, mar- : ried. a bridge gang foreman, employe' by the Railway Department, suffered severe scalp wounds. The workmen were returning to Ashhurst from a bridge in the middle of the gorge, where they were engaged in carrying out repairs. They had negotiated the line safely and were expect- j ing a scheduled mixed train from Pal- j merston North to Dannevixke, but j thought they had time to clear the tun- j nel, which is about 200 yards in length, before the train would arrive. Other jiggers had passed through, but j that on which Mr Hendrichson and his j compaions were riding was not so for- I tunate. While they were still in the j tunnel a train entered. The men on the jigger endeavoured to get out of reach of the locomotive and in the ensuing confusion Mr Hendrichson received a scalp wound, probably caused by contact with part of the engine or the train. He was brought to the Palmerston North Hospital, and to-night his condition, following an operation, was reported to be not serious
