SITUATION IN GERMANY LONDON. 9th February—?he Berlin corresponcfent of “The Times” states that continuing the uncertainty of future relations between tlie Army and Government is responsible for the tenseness which is still broocjmg over the situation. The so-called compromise caused much discontent among officers, resulting in the resignation of three generals, and also divided army sympathisers of the dismissed generals and supporters of the Government. Thus politics are introduced into the army, whereas previously they were excluded in the interests of discipline. Discontent among officers might pass quickly if they thought reorganisation was final, hut the changes have raised the possibility of a series of difficult problems which will develop if the Nazi Party attempts to transform the Reiehswehr into a Nazi army. It is believed that Herr Hitler Is not desirous of forcing the pace of such demands, but the army’s morale is h°und to h R affected by the knowledge that they arc overhanging. while personal uncertainties and fear that the secret police will supervise the appointments are also depressing —F.A. cable.
