i THE MONTHLY MEETING I I CORRESI’ONDENCE AND REPORTS : WORK OB’ THE JANUARY PERIOD At the monthly meeting of the Nelson e Harbour Board yesterday afternoon there were present: Messrs A. Gould 'chairman), W. C Harley. H. W. Kelly, F. I. Ledger, A. E. Max, G. Manson, J d R. Brunt, H. W. Chisnall, A. R. Kingsfnrd. The bank pass book current account showed credit £IB6O 10s 3d at 31st e December 1937, and £3610 5s 2d at 31st January, 1938. The statement of income showed: 1 Wharf dues. January £1650 4s lid e (£2060 6s 6d); harbour dues, January. . £453 9s lid (£644 15s 3d); rent receivable £l3l 17s 6d (£132 17s 6d); Mapua dues. £94 4s lid (£55 5s 3d). Totals £2329 17s 3d (£2893 4s 6d). e Payments confirmed totalled £ 1391 p 0s 2d; and accounts amounting to £176 0 8s 7d were passed for payment. CORRESPONDENCE 1 James Baird tendered his objection to the Power Board’s proposal to convey power across the harbour on the estuary of the Maitai by means of overly head wires. He stated that he was the holder of a considerable frontage to the . river which is navigable past the proy perty he holds and it was his intention to use the river to land supplies of firewood and other goods by means of SCOW'S. ■ The 'Engineers to the Power Board ] wrote saying that it was realised that any line laid across the portion of the harbour adjacent to Russell street must be constructed with due regard to the : requirements of navigation, and their . report to the Power Board had allowed [ for a submarine cable over this particular area. It was resolved to inform Mr Baird, that the plan before the Board showed 1 that the cables across the estuary would be submarine cables. , The question of charging wharfage in , connection with Mr Baird’s proposal to use scows is to be gone into, i The Shipwreck Relief Society wrote asking whether the Board would again grant a contribution. The usual sum of £2 2s was granted. The A.A. (Nelson) wrote stating that the Association w'as bringing pressure to bear in an endeavour to secure the improvement of the access from Nelson to the Lewis Pass and tq that end has written ttifAthe Main Highways Board. An immediate decision as to the route to be followed was asked for. It w'as resolved that the Board support the early completion of the Shenandoah rdad. HARBOUR MASTER The Harbour Master (Captain A. G. Christie) reported: The number of vessels arriving last month was 67 and the departures numbered 72. The amount of tonnage for the month was 23,402, compared with 29,014 tons for the corresponding period last year.

Dredging was resumed in the cross channel on the 12 th nistarit-and on the I 20th instant, the dredge was placed on" the slip for cleaning and painting. The 1 grabs were overhauled and repaired and several minor repairs were attend- , eel to. Dredging was resumed on the I 28th., and the amount of spoil lifted and | conveyed to sea in 14 loads was 980 j tons. The spoil consisted, of mud and ■ sand. I wish again to draw attention to the j congestion on the wharf that will ensue ! during the export season due to the limited amount of shed space. Considerable erosion is taking place in the lagoon on Haulashore Island i affecting several of the pine trees. Dredge Tc Wakatu: Dredging in har- ! bour during the month of January 1938, ’ 980 tons. £33 9s 4d: repairs or maintenance during same period, £42 5s 8d; cost per ton dredging and repairs for January, 1938, Is 6d. .

WHARFINGER The Acting Wharfinger (Mr A. Nelson) reported that the following cargo ■ was received at the wharves for the I month of January, 1938: Inward cargo, I 6621 tons; outward, 3815 tons; total for ! month, 10.436 tons. As compared with i the month of January, 1937: Inward j. cargo, 7093 tons; outw'ard cargo, 4653 J tons; total for month, 11,746 tons. I Throughout the past month we have been kept fairly busy and quite a good *

amount of inward and .outward cargo w'as handled over the wharves and a : fair amount of outside labour was em--1 ployed to cope with the w'ork. The total of inward and outward cargo shows a small decrease but at present we are very busy and we expect to have a very busy season with export fruit and general cargo. The fruit season promises to be a record. MECHANICAL ENGINEER ! The Mechanical Engineer (Mr G. Barltrop) reported: During last month j repairs have been carried out on | several trailers, also running repairs to ! the mules and cranes. Steel scaffold brackets were made for the wharf shed l at Mapua and sent over. The new moorings for visiting launches have been ; completed and laid in their positions, j The dredge was placed on the slip i for cleaning and painting, the oppor- | tunity being taken to overhaul the 1 grabs, operating drums, truck rails and the deck engine. Iron work and i bolts were made for yharf repairs. , ’ All the electric lifting gear in Nos. 2 and 4 sheds was dismantled and got i ready for examination by the Govern--1 Jns»-e'*tor. j The boilers on the steam crane and I pile driver were opened up for the ! inspector and the wharf cranes were 1 also examined and passed by him. WORKS FOREMAN The Works Foreman (Mr A. S. Johnson) reported that the following works have been carried out during January | 1938:— I Wharves: Repairing wharf deck and i margin. Driving pile and replacing ! new chafers on inside berth of wharf. | Sheds: Repairs to doors No. 2 shed, j Slipway: Hauling up and attending launches using slipway. ! Miscellaneous: Extension to boatshed slipway, repairing gratings dredge, and I general maintenance work. The Mapua Wharfinger (Mr D. Blanche) reported: Trade at this port for the month of January shows a de-

cided improvement over that of the corresponding period of last year. This is due to the heavy grop of Gravenstein apples, the bulk of which was exported.
