BOROUGH AFFAIRS | MEETING OF COUNCIL I From Dur Own (Jo r res pom lent/) The ordinary meeting of the Richmond Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr H. Warren Kelly), Councillors E. i Norris. W. E. Poole. A. R. TufTnell. M. j McGlashen. and W. L. Palmer. Councillor R. Polglaze was excused from attendance. Accounts totalling £IOO 18s !)d were passed for payment. FOREMAN’S REPORT The foreman’s report was read and adopted as follows: The cleaning up of the paths, etc., at the Cemetery has been done. The grader has been worked on the following streets and roads: Oxford street, Wensley road, McShane's road. Lower Queen street, and the NelsonWestport State Highway. On sth February the water at the reservoir was 3ft Tins below the spillway. CORRESPONDENCE The Labour Department wrote authorising the Council to employ nine unemployed men under Scheme 5 up to 26th February for the purpose of removing footpath and widening Cambridge street.
The Nelson Automobile Association asked for the Council's support in an effort to secure improvement in the Lewis Pass road. The Mayor stated that he had recently receive first-hand information that the road was in a very bad condition. It was resolved that the Council support the Association in its efforts to secure improvement in the road. The Mayor of Nelson wrote re contributions from local bodies in Wellington, Nelson and Marlborough towards the maintenance of the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery. The amount of the contribution asked for from Nelson is £95. The Mayor stated that on a population basis Nelson city should contribute £SO. Waimea County £3O. Motueka £lO. Richmond £5. Nelson city was willing to contribute £SO. It was resolved that the Waimea County and Motueka Borough be written to asking if they are willing to contribute £3O and £lO respectively. The New Zealand Library Association advised regarding lectures to be given in Nelson by Mr Alley and asking the Council to send a representative It was resolved that the Council join the Association (fee 10s 6d) and that the Town Clerk attend the lectures The New Zealand Theatre Chair Co Ltd. offered second-hand theatre seats suitable for the new hall at 5s Gd each. The Mayor stated that the chairs were exactly what was required and a private report on the condition of the chairs was being obtained. If this is satisfactory the matter will be further conidered.
Mr J. Joyce asked for permission to erect a garage within a less distance than five feet from the boundary of his section. It was resolved that considering the special circumstances permission be granted to erect the garage three feet from the boundary. Mr F. I. Ledger asked for the Council s approval of a subdivision and street widening in Cambridge street This was approved. The Works Committee presented a report on the conveniences at the back of the War Memorial Building. The report was adopted and the work is to be proceeded with at once.
