DUNEDIN WOOL SALE

CONTINENT CHIEF OPERATORS RANGE OF PRICES Ub Telegraph—Press Association] DUNEDIN, 9th February. Following is the official report ‘of the Dunedin Woolbrokers’ Association on the second Dunedin wool sale of the season, which was held to-day:— An offering of 30,128 bales was submitted to auction. The bulk of the wool consisted of finer lots from the back country and this included some super lots of Merino halfbred Corriedale breeds. Some of the clips from the Tapanui and South Otago districts showed their usual high standard, but a good proportion of the wools displayed, especially from the North Otago and coastal districts, did not have the same inviting appearance, much of it being dingy and tender.

There was a full and representative bench of buyers who, however, were operating under rigid limits. The Continent were the chief operators, with Bradford also in the market. Local mills took a considerable number of suitable super lines, but were buying very carefully. Japan purchased sparingly. The sale was inclined to be erratic, and competition was quiet throughout Passings were substantial, vendors’ reserves in many cases being at variance with the trend of the market. They would average approximately 17 per cent.

Prices can be quoted at par on those ruling- at the Invercargill sale for crossbreds. Finer wools, however, showed an easing to the extent of about ad on the last- Christchurch sale. The market showed a definite decline on the sale held here in December last, but this v/as no doubt accentuated on account of the heavier quality of the wools on sale. Fine wools showed a decline of from 2d to 4d per lb. fine crossbred 2d to 3d, and ordinary crossbreds Id to 2d. The sale for skirting was considered to be good, prices for these showing not the same variation. Top prices realised in the sale were 19Jd for three bales of Puketoi super merino and 19d for two lots, totalling 1 1 bales, of Mount Benger halfbred.
