LONDON SHOPS
The average New Zealander visiting London for the first time rather expects to find prices in the retail stores much lower than in the Dominion. However, those who go looking for bargains are often very disappointed.
Anything in the nature of quality goods, although manufactured in England and not subject to heavy Customs and transport charges, are apparently not much less than in New Zealand. London drapery stores mostly run halfyearly sales at the end of each season, but do not go in for general price reductions. During Mr B. Trathen’s recent visit he took particular notice of how they do things in London. In conversation With the manager of a large department store in the West End, the question was asked and the reply was “that only those goods they wanted to get rid of were reduced in price.” How different in Nelson! At Trathen and Co.’s Summer Sale, starting tomorrow, everything, with the exception of a few proprietary lines, will be offered at prices greatly less than usual. All household goods, Towels, Quilts, Sheets, Blankets, standard makes of Hosiery, Underwear, etc., are substantially reduced; but Dress Fabrics, Silks, Fashion Goods. Frocks, Costumes, Millinery and some Men’s Wear items show enormous reductions.
