FORTNIGHTLY MEETING OF BOARD ‘ UNAUTHORISED REMOVAL OF GRAVEL FROM QUARRY GENERAL BUSINESS AND DISCUSSION In attendance at last evening's meeting of the Tahunanui Town Board were Messrs M. O'Sullivan, in the chair, C. H. Chamberlain. A. Stagg and C. Palmer. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs W. Tiller. J. Logan and T. Roberts. Accounts amounting- to £125 5s 8d were passed for payment. The chairman. Mr O'Sullivan, expressed the board's pleasure at the recent honour conferred upon Sir Theodore Rigg. It gave him very much pleasure in moving that a letter of congratulation be forward to Sir Theodore, who was a resident in the board's district for a number of years.
The board’s foreman. Mr E. E. Win, in hrs monthly report drew the board’s attention to the possible danger caused by tne blocking of the view by a gorse hedge at the corner of Parker’s road and the new aerodrome road.
The property owners are to be notified to clear the noxious weeds from the road.
The Toswill Recreation Grounds trustees applied for exemption of rates. The board requested that a balance sheet of the Tennis and Croquet Clubs be forwarded, and the matter will be brought up for discussion at the next meeting, when a fuller attendance of members was anticipated. A monthly report from the Health Officer stated that with the exception of one case of scarlet fever. Tahunanui was free from infectious diseases.
The Public Works Department advised that plans of a proposed road in part sections 4 and 5 Suburban South, Block IV Waimea Survey District, steeper than the usual grade of 1 in 12, were approved.
The question of office hours being restricted to Mondays and Wednesdays only was held over until a full meeting of the board.
As the next meeting of the board falls due on Anniversary Day, it will be held on Wednesday, 2nd February. In order to permit the compilation and analysis of figures relating to motor licenses, the Transport Department wrote requesting the number of new licenses of each type issued by the board, the number of old licenses, renewed, and the sex of the licensee in each case, to be forwarded at the end of each month.
The secretary was instructed to carry out the instructions. .
Application for the erection of a garage in Moana Avenue was received. The works committee is to inspect. The Cawthron Institute applied for exemption of rates on their property in the vicinity of the Observatory. The exemption was granted.
The works committee is to inspect the site of a proposed formation of a footpath on the north-western side of Golf road.
The monthly report of the fire brigade was read by Mr Palmer. The report stated that the equipment and the engine were in good order, and that one rubbish fire had been dealt with. Mr Palmer was thanked for his report.
Mr Chamberlain said there was less chahee of fire on the reserve now that it was occupied
The chairman said that if people were careless in lighting fires in the vicinity, the caretaker should be more strict in his supervision, or some people should be prosecuted. •UNAUTHORISED REMOVAL OF GRAVEL The secretary was instructed to write to a resident asking upon what authority he had removed from the quarry a quantity of gravel which had been supplied to the service station. The chairman though 30 or 40 yards had been removed. No members of the board had been approached concerning the matter.
Mr O'Sullivan said he was not finding fault with the use of the gravel, but it was the principle of the thing that he objected to.
