ATTEMPT TO LINK UP HALTED DECISIVE BATTLE OF WAR MAY RESULT PROPERTY DAMAGE IN SHANTUNG [.United Press Association- By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright] (Received 13th January, 10.45 a.m.) SHANGTAI. 12th January. The Chinese have halted halt a million Japanese driving north and south towards Suchow in the greatest movement of the war. The outcome may be the war’s decisive battle. The Japanese for weeks past have been moving down the Tientsin-Pukow railway. Others switched to the north after the capture of Nanking with the intention of linking up with the northern Japanese forces. The junction of j the two armies would have cut off thouj sands of Chinese between the railway and the coast, meaning that the provinces o? Kiangsi, Shantung and part of Anhwei would drop into Japan’s hands. The latest reports state that Chinese opposition has halted almost all Japanese movement. The army spokesman estimates Japanese property losses in Shantung at £50,000,000
