DOMINION ROWING EIGHT
FOR THE EMPIRE GAMES TRAINING AT WANGANUI IH.V Telegraph-Frewi Association j j WANGANUI, 12th January. With barely a week left to complete its training before embarkation for Sydney and the Empire Games, the New Zealand Rowing eight has been j losing no opportunity of equipping itself as well as possible for its hard task in Australia. Under the coach, Mr F. H. Ayres, Christchurch, it has been out on the river daily rowing in the morning and afternoon, and there are definite signs of improvement since the coaching began. When the crew took the water lor the first row, local critics were sceptical of its reaching the standard required, but the last day or so has knocked off many of the rough edges, rej suiting in a much better and more rhythmic swing. Some members at the start were inclined to put a great deal of energy into their strokes, but to use less than the full blade-width of the oar. A notable exception was A. | Jackson, who has cultivated a style which, while very effective, looks remarkably easy. Styles. Christchurch, is also shaping very well.
