NEW INDUSTRIAL LOCATION
CAMPAIGN FOR STATE CONTROL [By Air Mail—From Our Own Correspondent] LONDON. It6h December. It has been interesting to watch the reaction of London business men—and indeed, the London Press—to the development of the campaign lor direct or indirect State control of new industrial location. A year ago before the proposal had been pressed home, there was abundant lip-service to the cause of rehabilitating the South Wales, West Cumberland and South West Durham areas To-day location means “dictatorship.” and nothing else. It is true that planned location would raise a vitally important political principle, and there is evidence that the Government will do anything rather than risk the controversy that would flame up among its own supporters. Meanwhile the Cabinet’s hopes and prayers are pinned to the revitalising effect of trading estates armament orders, and the trickle of new factories entering the areas irrespective of the impetus of the rearmament plan And London continues to spread at a rate that makes Paris. Berlin, and Rome look like provincial townships
