EKID.VV AFTERNOON'S FUNCTION j I AN ORIGINAL COMPETITION \ | i The beautiful grounds at tDo Appleby School presented an animated tip-, pcarance on Friday afternoon when in all directions children were to be seen loading round their calves or giving the finishing touches to their coats by means of a vigoroucs brushing, while from the ear-shed a vigorous crowing showed that here was staged the poultry section for those whose interests lay in that direction. The recently appointed headmaster, Mr A. E. Mills, was a member of the executive of the original Call Club formed in Taranaki ten years ago, and 1 on coining to Appleby he promptly formed a club there, and Saturday’s! display showed that his efforts had 1 met with a keen response trom the children. In the school buildings the children’s work was displayed, while a short programme of songs, recitations and plays by the children followed by the distribution of prizes by the chairman (Mr C. M. Robinson) and an abundant afternoon tea provided by the parents completed a very pleasant and interesting afternoon’s entertainment. Mr Rogers, secretary of the school j committee, apologised for the absence |of the Education Board members, | Messrs F. Hamilton and F. A. Carling land Mr G. W. Wilkes, president of the |A. and P. Association, lie stated that i the function that afternoon had one I refreshing feature in that it was entirely original so far as this district i was concerned, and he complimented : the teachers on the display they had .made. He also thanked Mr E. H. Hark- ; ness who had come from Richmond to judge the exhibits, a vote of thanks being carried by acclamation. 1 The following were the results of the ' judging:— CALF EXHIBITS

A feature of this class was the very neat record-book kept by Sh’ila Reay, which showed Hie daily ration of her calf from the day she had found it on the hills a starving orphan, till it was brought into the show-ring in perfect condition, and as the judge remarked a credit to its young owner.
