HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT

The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated 17th December, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:—

DAIRY PRODUCE IN LONDON The London butter market closed steady on Friday, according to a report received by the Primary Products Marketing Department and issued by the Dairy Board. New Zealand salted butter was quoted at 114 s, a rise of from 3s to 4s a cwt. on the week,

Friday's closing quotations, with those for the previous week in parentheses, were as follows: New Zealand: Salted, 114 s (110 s to Ills; a year ago, 99s to 100 s); unsaltcd, 115 s (115 s to 116 s, a year ago, 106 s to 108 s).

Australian: Salted, 113 s (108 s to 109 s); unsalted, 114 s (112 s). Argentine: Unsalted, 108 s to 110 s, ex. 112 s (106 s to 108 s).

Danish: 113 s f.0.b.; 115 s spot (130 s; 150 s to 151 s).

Dutch: Unsalted, 116 s, ex. 120 s (114 s). Lithuanian: Salted and unsalted, 114 s.

Retail prices in London are unchanged, New Zealand at Is 2d to Is 3d, and Danish at Is 4d to Is 5d a lb.

The basic rates fixed under the guaranteed price scheme, subject to quality differentials, are 123 s 8d for butter and 70s 4|d for cheese per cwt., f.0.b., New Zealand currency. The equivalent landed prices in London are 112 s for butter and 67s for cheese. The guaranteed price for butter is equal to 13.25 d per lb., f.0.b., New Zealand ports. The equivalent price for coloured cheese is 7.30 d per lb., f.o.b. and for white 7.36 d, compared with the guaranteed price of 7.54 d.

Deliveries of New Zealand butter last week totalled 3357 tons. The quantity in store in London on Friday totalled 2214 tons, as against 3680 tons a year ago. Deliveries of Australian butter were 2152 tons, the quantity in store being 1688 tons, as against 3013 tons a year ago

The cheese market closed quiet, quotations, with those for the previous week in parentheses, being as follows:

New Zealand: White, 65s to 65s 6d (66s 6d a year ago, 635); coloured, 64s 6d to 65s (65s 6d; a year ago, 635).

Australian: White, 62s to 63s 6d (63s to 655); coloured, 62s to 63s (02s to 645). Canadian: White and coloured, 72s to 745, 72s to 745).

English: Finest farmers’, 94s to 96s (945). Deliveries of New Zealand cheese last week were 21,229 crates, the quantity in store being 34.565 crates, as against 20,044 crates a year ago. Deliveries of Canadian cheese were 11,819 boxes, the quantity; in store being 153,498 boxes, as against 128,259 boxes a year ago.
