"I do not like men who use knives, and I am going to give you seven days.’ said Mr Hewil S.M., to John Henry O'Brien, aged 53, seaman, charged with assaulting Michael Coyne. "If you use your fists, that is another matter, but when you start with knives, that is not playing the game, and you know it,” said the Magistrate. Coyne in evidence said he was seated in a billiard room when accused came up and struck him twice on the face then produced a knife, and witness had his hand cut warding off a blow. The constable who was called in said the accused had a big pocket knife in his possession and was drunk. On a charge of drunkenness O'Brien was convicted and discharged.
