BRIGHTWATER
SUCCESSFUL GALA DAY FUNDS FOR BOWLING AND CROQUET CLUBS
The weather conditions on Saturday last were not of the best for the holding of the gala organised by the Brightwater Bowling and Croquet Clubs, but rain held off long enough to enable the function to proceed as arranged. At 1.30 p.m. the combined brass bands of Wakefield and Brightwater marched to Snowden's Bush. The wheelbarrow race from the Hotel corner to the Bush attracted eight competitors who were followed by an interested and amused crowd of spectators. The event was won by N. Palmer and G. Robinson.
The stallholders were soon busily engaged in retailing their various wares, while the organisers of the many competitions made full use of the short time at their disposal. Altogether a most successful and profitable afternoon was spent and the committee have reason to congratulate themselves. Especial thanks are due to the Wakefield and Brightwater Band, conducted by Mr R. Eden, to many business people for donations of goods and trophies and to local residents for gifts of produce etc. The following were in charge of stalls and competitions:— Afternoon tea: Mesdames T. Newman,
K. Hunt, W. Martin, Fowler, Duncan, Misses Palmer and Sigglekow, and Messrs Bryant and Roughton. Produce Stall: Messrs J. Fanselow and E. Silcock. Cake Stall: Mesdames E. Silcock and Walker. Jumble Stall: Mesdames Pearless and C. Hill. Ice Cream Stall: Mr and Miss Nock. Sweats Stall: Mr Evans and Miss Cederman. Sports: Messrs R. Haycock. Grigg, Moulder and Robertson. The baby show attracted good entries. Dr. Stenhouse kindly acted as judge and Mrs Higgins as organiser. The awards were as follows: Under six months, Mrs Lowe’s baby; six months to twelve months. Mrs Homer’s baby; twelve months to eighteen months, Mrs Moulder’s little girl Judith. Competitions were won as follows: Sheep, Mr Roughton; hamper, Mr K. Hunt: stockings. Miss F. Fearless; hen and chickens, Mr H. Andrews; chocolates, Mr S. Ford; stepping. Mrs Thomas; car obstacle race, Mr R. Falconer; cricket ball throw, Mr Griffiths. Mr G. Silcock acted as secretary of the gala and much credit is due to him for the able manner in which he carried out his duties. Messrs J. Hill and Duncan assisted him.
Mrs Rutherford and Mr W. Martin, presidents of the Croquet and the Bowling Clubs respectively, wish to thank all those who worked so well to make the function so successful.
