An allegation that lps younger brother, General Sir Harry Knox, had been dismissed from the Army Council at a few hours’ notice was made by Major-General Sir Allred Knox (Conservative) in the House of Commons last night. Sir Alfred Knox claimed that FieldMarshal Sir Cyril Devercll had been similarly treated. The Secretary of State for War (Mr llore-Belisha) replied that both officers I had retired to facilitate the promotion iof younger men. The political correspondent of the "Daily Express” says that the officers concerned approved this official explanation. In his speech Mr Hore-Blisha said:— “The changes which were announced last week will all have taken effect by I the New Year. If any further appoinlI merits are made the House may depend 1 upon it that merit, character, and ability, as well as suitability for any ! particular office, will be the guiding ! considerations, regardless of youth. ! age, or mere seniority. "All appointments will be made on the assumption that the holders will |be able to hold their posts under conjditions of active service. ! ‘The Government would like to place on record its appreciation of the long .and distinguished service which has ! been rendered to the State by those j senior officers who have vacated their |posts, and not least to their public j spirit in vacating them to facilitate these changes.”
