WATERSIDE WORK

CRITICISED BY SHIPPING MANAGER I by Telegraph - Press Association) AUCKLAND. 19th November Criticism of the standard of work of New Zealand watersiders was made by Mr C. M. Turrcll. general manager and director of the New Zealand Shipping Company, who returned to the Dominion by the Auatea after a business and holiday visit to England. Mr Turrcll said costs against shipowners had gone up in an extraordinary manner, and as far as New Zealand trade was concerned, practically no ships wore being built other than those which had been ordered prior to these rises The building programmes of various companies had been delayed.

One of the worst features of the situation for owners in the New Zealand trade was the poor work which was given by the waterside rs in the Dominion. "The New Zealand watersider can do just as good work a> anybody else and he used to do so,” said Mr Turrell The position had changed, however The standard of work was poor and was not what companies were entitled to, especially with the wages they were paying. In Australia. England, and elsewhere, much belter work was done by the same class of men.
