AURORA SAILING CLUB

RACING LAST SATURDAY With variable and squally weather the racing last Saturday proved very tricky work. Above the wharf a hard and squally south-east breeze came from the Maitai Valley after the start of racing. This gave most boats all they wanted in sailing this section and as variables and squalls all around the compass prevailed in the southern section of the harbour, some boats found themselves badly tricked in covering the course. The Idle Along class race evolved into a hard fought battle between Mayfair and Tainui. The latter won a great race, brilliantly sailed in difficult circumstances, saving her time and 40 seconds to boot on Mayfair. Certainly she had some of the luck, as Mayfair lost her spinnaker in a squall and carried away a runner backstay at the same time. By smart handling the mast and sail area were saved and Mayfair arrived second, after a clever race aga..Tst bad luck, and a worthy antagonist, Colleen trailing her a good third. Mayfair was fouled during the race by a non-club member’s boat. This is regrettable and owners of non-racing boats should practise courtesy in avoiding those racing. Surely there is room it. the harbour for all to sail and enjoy their sport, racing or cruising. A and B handicap class showed a poor muster. Only two boats Scandal and Manunu crossed the line to finish, the former scoring her win. Lcandcr unfortunately arrived late for the start, but sailed over the course to score her points for the cup. Rodney also started, but was disqualified. They were undcr-crcwcd for some of the weather they struck and times were poor in consequence.

In the evening a very successful dance was held by the Club at the Velma Hall. A good attendance and bright music with an excellent supper made a pleasant evening to round off a good day’s racing. Weather permitting there will be racing for the Tauranga class to-mor-row when it is hoped to see this class in full force.
