Tire South African Minister of Dedence, Mr O. Pirow, in a speech denied that the Union Government had agreed to assist Britain in war-time or to defend the British colonies. “If ever you are called on to take up a rifle because we have a contract with Britain to go to war, I tell you now as Minister of Defence that I give you permission to rebel and refuse to go to war. I shall be the first to rebel in such circumstances.”
