SPECTACULAR BLAZE
HOUSE AT KELBURN DAMAGED FIREMEN AFFECTED BY SMOKE [B.v Telegraph-Press Association! WELLINGTON, This Day. A fire discovered in an upper room of Mrs W. S. Austin’s eight-roomed house in North Terrace, Kelburn, developed into a spectacular blaze. The brigade was summoned at 8.30 a.m., and by the time they had arrived the flames had a strong hold. They ran out three leads but the main hydrant failed owing to a broken casting and precious minutes were lost while a new hydrant was got into position further up the street and longer leads brought into play. The result was the complete gutting of the upper storey and heavy damage to the lower portions of the house by smoke and water. The smoke was so dense that the firemen had difficulty in entering the place and several were badly affected. The house is understood to be insured for £I6OO. CROQUET RECORDS DESTROYED WELLINGTON, This Day. The fire at the residence of Mrs Austin at Kelburn this morning resulted in the destruction of most of the New Zealand Croquet Association records. Mrs Austin is the New Zealand secretary.
