The Cairo correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says an Italian who returned from Abyssinia asserts that the recent revolt which occurred in Addis Ababa caused far heavier Italian casualties than were reported. The Italians imagined the main resistance was ended, and in accordance with the furtherance of a wish to raise a large native army they armed thousands of Abyssinians with modern rifles and machine-guns under Italian officers. The recruits were at first docile and apparently pleased to become •Italian soldiers, but meanwhile they were preparing the rising At a pre-arranged signal they turned on the officers, killing all of them, and attempted to ensure a general rebellion. All available Italian troops and Askaris were rushed to Addis Ababa and quelled the revolt.
