MOTUEKA

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING [From Our Own Correspondent] The annual meeting of the Motueka Horticultural Society was held in the Society’s hall, when the president (Mr George Stratford) occupied the chair. The report and balance sheet were read and adopted, the latter subject to audit. The statement of‘accounts disclosed a credit of £3O 15s Id with an excess of assets over liabilities of £403 4s Bd.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS Officers for the ensuing term were elected as follows: President, Mr R. P. Rowling; vice-presidents, Mrs J. T. j Brough, and Messrs S. B. Canavan, N. jßoss, A. Adams, J. Goodyer and the |Rev. H. Blomfield and Messrs W. J. jFry; treasurer, Mr W. G. Anderson; auditor, Mr A. L. Vickerman; show secretary, Mr S. B. Canavan; schedule committee, Mrs J. T. Brough and Messrs J. Goodyer, George Stratford, G. H. Budden, S. B. Canavan and the Rev. 11. Bloomfield; general committee, the RFev. 11. Blomfield and Messrs W. J. Bruning, N. Ross, S. B. Dobbie and J. T. Brough. After a discussion it was decided, on the motion of Messrs Stratford and Adams that the Summer Show be held as usual this year. Mr Stratford said that the date chosen last year did not altogether suit the rose growers, as it was a little too early for the best blooms. Mr Adams drew attention to the fact that Tasman had held its show some weeks after the Motueka show and had had a very good display.

It was decided, on the motion of Mr Anderson and Mrs Brough, that the Summer Show be held in the third week in November next, entries to close at noon on the day prior to the day of the show.

Ist March, 1938 was fixed as a tentative date for the Autumn Show (Messrs Adams and Stratford).

The membership subscription was fixed at ss, the same as last year. The matter of repairs to the hall and main entrance doors was left in the hands of Mr W. Anderson with power to act.

ANNUAL REPORT The annual report was as follows: “Only one show was held during the year, the Summer show on 13th November. After careful consideration of the matter the committee decided not to hold the Autumn show. February is now one of the busiest months in the year, in this district; and it is practically impossible to stage a successful show at this time. Roses, as usual, were a feature f the Summer Show and many fine blooms were staged. Entries in the other sections were small and the exhibits, generally speaking, were not up to the usual

standard. The storm, which occurred a week earlier than the show, had a disastrous effect on the early flowers and, no doubt, accounted, in some measure, for the, small number of entries and the drop in standard. The rose bowl donated by the Riwaka School Committee was won by Mr Reg. i Rowling, whilst the sweet pea trophy was won by Mrs J. H. Rankin, with 19 points, the runner-up being Mrs E. M. Canton. The champion bloom certificate in the rose classes went to the Riwaka School and the rose bowl for the best decorated table to Mrs N. J. Lewis. The display of flowers, arranged for effect was won by the Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild. The attendance at the Summer Show was very poor and a much greater interest in the work of the Society by the district as a whole I is required if our shows are to be continued. We wish to place on record our appreciation of the services gratuitously rendered to the Society by those ladies and gentlemen who have given of their valuable knowledge in the capacity of judges at our shows and jto Mr and Mrs S. B. Dobbie and the Rev. Canon Crossman. Repairs to and the painting of the Society’s buildings are urgently needed. The president and members of the committees wish to record their appreciation to all those who have supported the Society by exhibiting at the show and all who have assisted in other ways to carry on the Society’s work. To the incoming committee they offer their best wishes for a most successful year.”
