MR \V. S. WHARTON l |)v Telegraph—Press Associationl CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The death occurred of Mr W. S. Wharton, M.B.E, secretary to the North Canterbury Hospital Board, who had announced his retirement on 81st December.
Mr Wharton was born in London. In 1884 he arrived in New Zealand, and be was appointed to the staff of the Ashburton and North Canterbury United District Charitable Aid Board, in March, 1866. He continued in the same service when the Charitable Aid Board amalgamated with the North Canterbury Hospital Board in 1910, and in 1912 he was appointed secretary of the Hospital Board. Mr Wharton’s service received well-earned recognition
in the last New Year Honours, when the honour of M.B.E. (Member of the Civil Division, Order of the British Empire) was conferred upon him. Besides his life’s work he was interested in several branches of sport. Rifle-shooting was his favourite sport, and it claimed his interest in a good part of c little leisure time he had. For several years he took part in the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting at Trentham. Mr Wharton is survived by his widow, and by his mother, Mrs C. Wharton, of Christchurch, now in her ninety-eighth year. OTAGO NONAGENARIAN MRS MARION ALLEN DUNEDIN, This Day. The death occurred of Mrs Marion Allen, aged 93 years, who landed with her parents at Port Chalmers from the ship Phillip Laing in 1848. A large part of her life was spent at Waimale. She returned here on her husband’s death in 1911. There are now only two survivors of this immigrant ship.
MR J. B. ISMAY [By Telegraph—Press Association! IVleg i a ph-Copy right I LONDON, 18th October. The death has occurred of Mr Joseph Bruce Ismay, shipowner, who formerly controlled the While Star Line. He was aboard the Titanic when she sank. Mr Ismay was a director of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, and the Birmingham Canal Navigation Company. He was chairman of the Liverpool and London War Risks Association.
