SCHOOL BUSES
MUST HAVE FITNESS CERTIFICATES NO LONGER EXEMPT UNDER ACT (By Telegraph—Press Association] WELLINGTON, This Day. In a long statement to-day with regard to the fitness- of school buses, the Hon:-P: Fraser, Minister of Education, to-day pointed out that they must have fitness certificates. They are no. longer exempt under the Transport Act, exemption having been revoked last .December. All possible. steps are being taken to ensure that at the earliest possible date every vehicle carrying school children will have been inspected. Mr Fraser also said that in the statistics since 15th March - covering well over 500 accidents, there appeared only one accident involving a school bus, and in that case it was found the vehicle was in excellent condition and fully complied with transport requirements. The requirements regarding ventilation and any other factor affecting health would be insisted on. GOOD RECORD IN OTAGO DUNEDIN, This Day. Conveyance services for school children have been running in the Otago district for 20 years without accident involving injury to children, stated an Education Board official when the. Hon. R Semples statement concerning the licensing of school buses was referred to him. ’ He stated that all the Otago buses were examined by the County Council or other local authority inspector, and the Board was satisfied from, the inspection certificates that the buses were safe. Over ; a thousand children are daily. conveyed under these contracts.
