CRAWFORD DEFEATS MENZEL BOTH PLAY CLEVERLY (Received 22nd June, noon) LONDON, 21st June. Crawford (Australia) in the first round of the Wimbledon singles, defeated Menzel (Czechoslovakia) by 3 sets to 2. Crawford’s backhand was working perfectly in the early sets, his forehand placement also being fine, but Menzel caused him worry with a hard service and heavy topspin drives. Both played clever tennis, but the similarity of the tactics tended to dullness. The match lasted 2 hours 20 minutes. Bromwich (Australia), making his first appearance at Wimbledon, opposed only a good club player. The Australian was not very convincing. McGrath started shakily and was unable to find a reply to Ellmer’s steadiness, but found his touch in the second set. Thereafter he outplayed his Swiss opponent.
