NELSON BOARD’S MEETING NEW SCHOOLS, ADDITIONS AND SITES The monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board to-day was attended by the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre (chairman). Messrs J. H. Harkness, F. A. Carling, H. Barltrop, F. V. Knapp, J. G. Wilkens, E. J. Scantlebury, and F. A. Hamilton. Accounts amounting to £9,672 11s 9d were passed for payment. The Appleby committee wrote expressing appreciation of the remodelling of the old classroom. A sub-committee of the board reported on suggestions for the erection of a central school on a new site at Dennistoa The question of consolidation at Denniston was held over pending further investigation and it was decided to inform the Burnett’s Face committee that nothing would be done before they were consulted. The Minister of Education advised the board of a grant for the erection of a new school at Foxhill. It was decided to call tenders for the building.

An application was received for the establishment of a school at Gowan Valley. It was decided to make application to the Minister with a view to obtaining authority to establish a school.

The secretary reported on the negotiations made for the purchase of the Granity Domain for a new school site. The secretary reported that it was an excellent site, ideally situated, grassed, drained and levelled. The area was over 4 acres.

The chairman suggested that the Minister should be approached tor authority for the board to enter negotiations with the Westport Coal Company for the purchase of the area. He said arrangements could be made for the sports bodies now using the ground to continue to do so, but if the board made the purchase those bodies would have to make some contribution to the board for use of the ground. The chairman was appointed to Interview the Minister on the proposed purchase. The Hira Committee requested the enlargement of the school grounds. It was pointed out that there were at presnet 32 pupils and the area of the site one acre. The board considered the attendance would fall when the Public Works Department camps moved on and so the matter was deferred. Mrs E. M. Creasy offered a property to the board for a teacher’s residence. The offer was declined. The Mapua Committee requested the remodelling of the infant room. The architect is to report to the next meeting of the board, The residents of Muddy Creek, (near Pakawau) asked for the establishment of a school for seven children from the Public Works camps. The secretary was instructed to investigate the possibility of the. establishment of a household school; alternatively, that the Public Works Depar-•<«, asked to provide transport. REPAIRS AND ALTERATIONS . It was decided to instal a hotwater service at the Brooklyn teacher’s residence. The Dovedale Committee was granted £2O towards incidental expenses. A plan of the proposed improvements was submitted. It was decided to instal a new heater at Glenhope. The Hira committee was granted £4 for a new fence and concreting. The architect had no recommendation to make in collection with the sanitary block at Motueka technical school. Repairs to fences and the building are to be carried out at Motupiko. The Ngatimoti committee was granted £lO towards the cost of concreting in front of the school. (Proceeding)
