STOKE-NELSON BRANCH THIRD BIRTHDAY PARTY LARGELY ATTENDED FUNCTION A large number of Women’s Division members and their friends met in the Stoke hall to celebrate the third birthday of the Stoke-Nelson branch. Mrs Robinson, the president welcomed visitors from all parts of the district. Among those present were Mrs Hildyard, provincial president, Mrs Forsyth, vicepresident and member of the Dominion Advisory board and presidents from the following branches: Richmond, Waimea, Waimea West, Mapua, Riwaka, Tasmania riiv Redwood’s Valley, Pangatotara, Wakapuaka, Miwipango, Stanley Brook, Moutei'e and Wakelield-Spring Grove and Nightcaps (Southland)-; ■ Mrs Page and Mrs Plumridge represented the Townswomen’s Guild and severa! members of the Stoke-Wakatu Women’s Institute were present. It was also very gratifying to welcome Mesdames Atmore, Gilbert and Moncrieff of Nelson and Miss Cooke of the VV.C'.T.U. Apologies from Mesdames Taylor, Baigent and Berryman, Women’s Division presidents from Motueka, Murchison and Motupiko. Mesdames Chaytor, Day, Davies and Smith, Women’s Institute presidents from Wakefield, Tahunanui, Stoke-Wakatu, and Hope-Rauzau, Mrs Bedwell and Mrs Dagger of Stoke and from the following Stoke members, Mesdames Price, Manson and E. R. Black, and from Mrs Taplin, housekeeper-sec-retary. The programme was as follows:—Song, Mrs Morris; pianoforte solo, Miss Walslebeuj vocal duet, Mrs T. H. Robinson and Mrs Du FJou; pianoforte solo, Miss N. Smith; song, Mrs Montgomery; playreading, arranged by Mrs Campbell, the following taking part—Mesdames Chisnall, Marshall, Stride and Miss Walsleben. Afternon tea was served by the ladies after which Mrs Robinson called on Mrs Atmore to light the three candles on the birthday cake. Mrs Atmore wished the branch many years of good work. Mrs Sinclair of the Nightcaps branch of the W.D.F. U. blew out the caudles and gave greetings from the Southland executive. Mrs Hildyard cut the cake and Mrs Forsyth, vice-president made the, second cut. Roth ladies wished the branch success and happiness and Mrs Hildyard spoke of the forthcoming Girls’ EducationaJ Course to be held in' Nelson. Miss Florence Hope, won the competition, A pleasant and happy afternoon was spent- by all present. . The birthday ball which was held during the same week, was a happy function. Music was supplied by Lex Logan’s Dance Band and supper was served by the Women's Division committee.

The president in. reviewing the past year said that during the year ending 30tb April, six branch meetings were held m tile school. “At our annual meeting we were privileged to have with- us Mrs Forsyth, Provincial President and Donnjoion oigamser. We were m some doubt auout continuing our meetings, as so few mem-

bers attended, but Mrs Forsyth persuaded us to continue lor another three months before deciding definitely At the end of that time we decided to carry on as usual. Since then there has been a decided improvement in attendance at meetnigs. We were sorry Mrs Wells was un. auie to cany on as president after July, but we value her greatly as a member.

"On Bth August after the usual meeting winch was held at Mrs Basil Drum, moud's, we had an afternoon party in honour of our secretary, Miss Wells, who was married shortly afterwards. Our good wishes were accompanied with a small gift of appreciation. "At our birthday party, 4th September, all members helped to make the function a success. We were pleased to welcome members from other branches.

"1 take this oportunity of thanking all officers and members for their co-opera-tion and help and we feel that the coining year will be one of increased interest and usefulness to us all. "Mrs B. Drummond kindly offered to enquire if .Mrs Randall of Motupiko branch would givo an address on kindergarten work. The result was a most instructive and interesting address and demonstration on 20th May. Mrs Randall was thanked whole heartedly for her

helpfulness. "We would gladly welcome members from any branch willing to®address us or give us demonstrations of any kind. "Knitted • squares was our competition for 20th May. A large number of vari. coloured squares resulted, from these a quilt is to be constructed and sold. Competitions for the coming year are to he cooking and handwork alternative months." the Suggestion Box" opened up well members displaying enthusiasm. A bring and buy. stall is to be conducted at each meeting. Miss Barker will undertake this work A plant exchange conducted by Mrs R Drummond will help our home garden ers.
