WOMEN’S Institute [From Our Own Correspondent] ■there was a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Murchisdn Wometi’s Institute. Mrs L. Hutchings presided. The meeting was opened with the reading of the Aspiration after which one new member was accepted arid whicortied. Mrs W. Watson, who was unanimously elected group convener for the Institute, signified her willingness to accept the office. The competitions for the afternoon were for puff pastry, and for knitted cushion covers, both bringing in a good number of ehtries. Mrs McEarlane gained first place for puff pastry, and Mrs W. Watson and Mrs Worthington tied for second place. In the knitted cushion competition Mrs J. Goodyer ivas first, and Mrs Moran second. Mrs Logan introduced a tehnis competition, tor which Mrs J. Goodyer carried oil the prize. After a dainty afternoon tea had been served by the hostesses, Mrs Logan and Mrs Macdonald, the oppot-
tunity was taken of bidding farewell to Mfs G. Hi Hart, who is shortly leaving the district. Mrs Hart has been a member of the Murchison Women’s Institute for a number of years, and has proved herself a good member in many ways, and it was felt that her departure would mean a great loss to the Institute. On behalf of the members, Mrs Hutchings presented Mrs Hart with a set of cups and saucers and plates, and a shoulder spray, extending to her the best wishes of all in her new surroundings. Mrs Hart suitably replied. The delegates report of the yearly council meeting held at Motueka was read and proved to be very interesting. Mrs Conway gave an exhibition of smocking which was greatly appreciated by all members. It was decided to hold a combined street stall sale on Saturday morning, 3rd July, the proceeds to be in aid of the Nelson district Crippled Children’s Fund. The Murchison and Longford Institutes were to combine in the running of this function.
The meeting was closed with the singing of the National Anthem. The next meeting is to be held on Wednesday, 21st July, at 2 p.m., when Mrs J. Downie and Mrs J. Goodyer will be the hostesses. GIFT EVENING A social evening was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall in honour of Miss Edna Lynch whose marriage to Mr J. M. Paterson is to take place on Saturday. A large number of friends assembled and a very pleasant evening was enjoyed by all. A dainty home made supper was served, after which Mr R. M. Thompson spoke on behalf of those present, wishing the young couple every happiness in their future life. Mr Paterson suitably replied, thanking those present for their good wishes, and for the very useful gifts which had been displayed.
