Bagahkametsi was fined £SO, in default a year’s imprisonment, two witch doctors were fined £SO. in default a year’s imprisohhientj and a third was discharged. The District Commissioner, in passing the sentence, denounced the frequency of witchcraft. He declared that the witch dictors were snakes exploiting the fears of the people. Their methods were tantamount lo blackmail.
A message from Capetown last week stated that Bagahkametsi, the divorced ■wife of Tshekedi, chief of the Ba-Man-gawatos, pleaded guilty in the District Commissioner’s Court to the serious charge of practising witchcraft. Three natives, who it was alleged were witchdoctors, also pleaded guilty. Bagahkametsi was accused of attempting to bewitch and injure the queen mother, Semane, because she thought Semane was attempting to alienate Tshekedi’s affections from her. Evidence was giver that Bagahkametsi and the witchdoctors arranged to put love philtres in Tshekedi’s tea.
