PLAYER STRIKES REFEREE
*, AFTER ORDER TO LEAVE FIELD INCIDENT DURING SENIOR MATCH [By Telegraph—Press Association] PALMERSTON N„ This Day. A sensational incident in which a senior Woodville player struck the referee, A. Ward, who is a police constable stationed at Palmerston North, marked the opening of the Manawatu Rugby Union’s competitions on Saturday. Constable Ward was struck twice bn the right cheek, from which some of the skin was removed, and on the chin. The garne was the senior fixture at Woodville, between St. Patrick’s (Palmerston North) and Woodville. The player concerned was Warned by the referee, and the incident followed a subsequent order to leave the field. It is understood that Constable Ward is not laying a charge of assault against the man who struck him, as he prefers that he be dealt with by the Rugby Union management committee.
