Nelson Evening Mail SATURDAY. APRIL 24 1937 SPECIAL PROGRESS ISSUE
WE trust to-day’s special issue of “The Mail" and the development it represents will be of service to city and district. The goodwill of the people generally is highly prized, and cooperation with us for the district’s good is always welcomed. To look back in “The Mail” files for
1 7 I years, as we have done for this issue, is to see much earnest enIdeavour by those who have trod ' this way before, and it is interesting to note that many of the I amenities taken for granted today, were once a subject of public controversy and heated argument. In 1866 “The Mail’’ intimated it was “attached to no party, devoted to no faction, seeking only to advance the interests of the province and the prosperity of the whole colony.” This has been our aim through the years. It means independence in advocacy and absence of excessive antagonism in criticism. It means, too, respect for opinions sincerely held whether they coincide with the views of this journal or not. Today, Nelson can look to the future with confidence, although in some instances there are still serious problems to solve. Extension of intensive cultivation on sound lines is bringing its reward both in horticulture, and agriculture. Stock improvement is proceeding on many farms. There is wider knowledge abroad of Nelson and district's residential and educational qualifications—two of our greatest assets. Hydroelectric power is soon to be an accomplished fact and plans have been prepared for development of our mineral resources.
