MILLER’S SECTION

[To The Editor]

Sir—To secure Miller’s Section as a site for the whole of our Municipal offices together with Town Hall, . Art Gallery, and Pioneers’ Memorial Hall, etc., is nothing more nor less than a wise provision for the big future ahead. The price is reasonable and the location as a suitable site for the above can not be duplicated. It is eminently desirable In every way. There is no intention of proceeding with building operations in-

stantly. There is no immediate need, but in a shorter time than some of us may estimate Nelson may find that a move in this diretcion will be deemed desirable. Nelson is no longer stagnant —nor is it now isolated. We must move with the times and keep abreast of them. Here, we will have our civic activities right in the very heart of the city. In the near neighbourhood two imposing and handsome buildings are about to be commenced —the new Government Fire Office and a large warehouse with residential flats above.

The erection of the latter will do away with an open space used during recent

months as a free parking place to the very great convenience of motorists. Miller’s section in its present state is indeed deplorable. I think no valid reason can be advanced why a considerable portion of it (for the time being) can not be set aside for parking purposes and to ease the congestion in the nearby streets, during the evening hours particularly. When the time comes. I am inclined to think that a buyer for the present municipal offices will be readily forthcoming. The site has undeniable advantages but is much too cramped for its present occupiers. To extend the

site by the purchase of adjoining and near by properties will be unprofitably costly—and even then it will be ineffective and insufficient. —I am etc. OBSERVER. Nelson, 22nd April.
