The following were the measures adopted by the Committee of Public Safety. Nelson. 30th September, 1843. 'After the Wairau Massacre). “To complete the fortification and render it a safe place of refuge. To clear the fern throughout the town in order that it may afford no protection to the enemy. To establish an efficient watch at all points where the enemy can approach. that we may not be taken oy surprise. To drill and exercise in the use of firearms the watch and all volunteers.”
