AN OLD RACE MEETING
11l its report of the Nelson races of 1866, the “Mail” stated: “The races which have lately excited so much interest commenced this morning. The day was all that could be desired, and the road to the course at Stoke was early lined with horsemen and pedestrians, as well as with vehicles of all kinds, conveying the eager holiday folk to the ground. We noticed there nearlv all the public officers and'business men of Nelson, proving that the occasion for a holiday had been generally taken advantage of, a fact which might be seen also by the deserted appearance of the town all day.” The following is from the report of the second day’s racing:—"The number of horsemen-and ladies on horesback was, perhaps, great- j er than that of the day before. Tired! tradesmen, excited clerks, and jolly diggers had pressed every available quadruped into their service, to such an extent, that many of our most estimable fellow-citizens had to exercise their pedestrian powers, or forego the exciting pleasure of the races.”
