—Tyree (photo). The barque Asterion entering Nelson Harbour. The vessel first visited Nelson in 1887, arriving on 12th November, in command of Captain Collingwood (99 days on voyage from London).. She was here again on 28th November the following'year, find on 17th November, 1809, this time under command of Captain Alsop. The following year she'arrived'on 29th August with Captain Burton. In 1891 Captain A. B. Foote brought her to Nelson, arriving on 22nd October. On this trip very heavy gales were experienced, on 23rd September the barometer falling from 30.30 to 29.28 in twenty hours, and at 5 a.m. a tremendous sea broke over the ship, filling decks fore and aft, smashing the fore cabin door, flooding the fore cabin, smashing and washing away poop ladders, filling the galley and putting the fire out. At 4 p.m. the wind fell suddenly light, leaving a heavy sea running, causing the ship to labour and strain' heavily, and roll violently, snapping a chain plate in two in the port main rigging. January 27th, 1894, was the date of the. Asteriori’s next arrival in Nelson and 28th January the following year she was still'in'charge of Captain Foote, She was. at Nelson again on 16th January, 1897, and In 1898 (23rd May). .In 1899 she came out .to Nelson for the last time in charge of Captain Jeppson. The Anchor Company’s Charles Edward is also in the picture.
