A SUNDAY MORNING OF 1842
NATIVE SERVICE EARLY SETTLER IMPRESSED Writing in his diary on Sunday, 28th March, 1842, the Hon. J. W. Barnicoat said: vVe were informed last night that the Rev. Mr Hadfleld, a clergyman of the Church of England and missionary, would read service to-day at the Port. On our walk there to attend this morning we passed a service among the natives, at which Mr Hadfleld officiated. When we happened to pass the attendants were singing a hymn, sitting posture, but in a reverential manner. The sight on
the whole was extremely interesting. We afterwards attenefcd our morning service at the Emigration Barracks (where it was thought more convenient, to hold it). About 50 colonists attended and a few Maoris. Full service was read and afterwards in extempore sermon delivered. This was the first time a church service was ever read at Nelson by an ordained clergyman.
