NORMA SHEARER
Two months in the desert have done wonders for Norma Shearer. ' When she arrived in Arizona, she was in a sad, almost hopeless, state of apathy, and suffering from a racking cough. Now her friends rejoice that she is in good health, and beginning to shake off her lethargy. She actually listens to suggestions for a trip that will divert her mind from her recent tragedy. She rejected all ideas of Europe or Palm Beach, but she will go to New York to see her friend, Helen Hayes, play in “Victoi'ia Regina.”
She is getting hold of herself, and is definite about her next picture being “Marie Antoinette,” the one she and Irving Thalberg had planned together in every detail. Irving thought that the only man to play Louis XVI was Charles Laughton; and Norma will urge him to come to Hollywood when she is ready to begin work.
Refreshed by her vacation trip to New York, Eleanor Powell has started rehearsals for her next M.G.M. musical, “Broadway Melody of 1937,” which will go into production shortly.
Sophie Tucker (“America’s Red Hot Mamma”) was recently added to the cast.
Others will include Robert Taylor, Buddy Ebsen, Sid Silvers, Charles Gorin, George Murphy, Judy Garland, George Clayton and Larry Adler.
