AROUNP THE TRDPPS ST. JOSEPH’S ACTIVITIES SEVERAL CHANGES The roll strength now stands at 24. There have been several changes in the troop this year. First we lost W. Day, D. Westrupp and P. Boyce who went to St. Patrick’s College to further their studies, and then W. Rooney went to Kaikoura. New recruits to the troop ar.e: John Finlay and Roy Curtain, while Ted Jacobson and Dan Harley have made a re-appearance. To these boys v/e extend a hearty welcome and hope that their associations with the troop will be very happy ones. On 21st Inarch the trpop paraded at St. Mary’s Church jn honour of Founder’s Day, The Rev. Father Cullen dejiyered an appropirate sermon on .Scouting, and appealed for more pubr lie support for the movement. Our “Akela”, Miss B, Aydon, has left on a trip to Honolulu, and we wish her 'a happy holiday, and feel sure that the Cub Pack will benefit by her exper? lence, as she intends to get in touch with Scouting in Honolulu. Ron Fowjer and Frank Keenan, have
been successful in passing their Swimmer’s Badge and these were presented during the month, along with badges that were won during the Christmas holidays. Owing to the troop being re-arranged, 2nd R. Fowler has been promoted to Patrol Leader of the Kangaroos, while F. Keenan has been elected to 2pd of the Parrakeets. The troop intend holding a concert later on in the year, and practices will commence immediately. ANZAC TROOP The attendance at the parades is showing a marked improvement, and many signs of keen interest are evident. On account of this the Scoutmaster is able to receive a small number of new boys and any wishing to join the Troop will do well to turn up early. The Scoutmaster is limiting the number to 30 boys at present. Two parades are being held each week. The Saturday parade will appeal to all boys as it is really “Scouting”—scout work in the open air. One Saturday was spent on the Dun Track, and another spent at Cable Bay. The following badges have been passed: Tenderfoot, J. McLaren; Second Class Signalling, T. Harrison; 2nd Class Bandaging (practical), M. Ruahine, R. Way; second class firelighting, R. Way, B. St. John, J. Venner (repassed), K. Cotton, A. Weir, B. Nicholls; Second Class Cooking, p. St. John, T. Harrison, B. Nicholls (re-passed), K. Cotton; Second Class Thrift, T. Harrison. Two competitions will commence on Wednesday Evening. One is an inter-patrol competition and the other is for the most improved Scout during the month. IRON DUKE SEA SCOUTS The Troop is very active and very optimistic. The .Harbour Board has granted the Troop the use of the old Magazine on the Boulder Bank. .This will be used as a base for the collecting of drift wood which will be cut up and sold. The funds of the Troop need building as the boys are looking forward to a proposed Dominion Sea Scout Camp at Wanganui at Christmas. On Saturday, 3rd April, the children from St. Mary’s Orphanage were taken for an outing on Haulashore Island. Although the Troop did not retain the trophies competed for at the Wellington Sea Scout Regatta they were very pleased to be presnted with a trophy for the crew showing the best style of rowing. The parade night is now changed to Thursday. Hugh Hounsell formerly Bos'uns Mate has been appointed Assistant Scoutmaster and Third Mate.
