ARMAMENT ORDERS
PLACED IN SPECIAL AREAS (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, 7th April. In the House of Commons last night, in moving the second reading of the Government’s Special Areas Bill, the Under-Secretary of State for Scotland, Mr 11. J. Scrymgeour-Wedderburn, said that in the past month armament orders given to the special areas had increased from £41,000,000 to £57,000,000.
Commitments on schemes of assistance for local authorities, development councils, and social improvement in England had increased from £8,500,000 to £10,500,000, he said. Unemployment in the special areas had fallen by more than 10,000, and the Special Areas Commissioner had been empowered to Settle a further 1000 families on the land.
