RICHMOND

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING (From Our Owu Correspondents The ordinary meeting of the Richmond Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr 11. Warren Kelly) in the chair, Councillors Palmer, TufTnell, Norris, Polglaze, McGlashen. An apology for absence was received from Councillor Poole. Accounts totalling £l6B 15s 7d were passed for payment. FOREMAN’S REPORT Since the holidays the grader has been worked on the Main Highways Nelson-Inangahua Junction and Rich-mond-Collingwood also on the following streets and roads: Wensley Road, Oxford street, Lower Queen street, Champion road, Hill street and Upper Queen street. The Main Highways Board notified that work on the Salisbury road culvert would be commenced in the near future. The only cost to the borough is the preparation of plans and specifications for the work, £26 ss. The Minister of Transport wrote enclosing recommendations made by the Road Safety Council. Comments by local bodies were asked for. The circular was filed for reference. Further circulars from the Transport Minister regarding signs and speed limits are to be handed to the Traffic Inspector. The Motueka Harbour Board forwarded a report for the year 1936. This was laid on the table for perusal by members. Surprise was expressed at the volume of business done by the Board.

The Superintendent State Advances Corporation wrote giving required information on the Housing Scheme. It was pointed out that a definite scheme must be outlined before funds for the erection of houses could be advanced.

Consideration of the matter was deferred till next meeting.

Mr Andrews wrote regarding his water supply. An inspection of the property is to be made. The Waimea County Council wrote regarding the proposed Bill on the Amalgamation of Local Bodies, and invited the borough to forward representatives to a conference of the local bodies concerned to be held in Nelson at 10 a.m. on 22nd January.

The Mayor said that the Bill had not yet become law and he considered the County Council’s action to be somewhat premature. It was resolved that the Mayor and Councillors TufTnell and Norris represent the Borough Council at the meeting. Mr E. W. Win forwarded a letter from an absentee ratepayer regarding a culvert in Hill street. It was resolved that the ratepayers concerned be further written to concerning the matter.

The Health Inspector forwarded his quarterly report. There had been no cases of infectious disease and everything was quite satisfactory.

THE TOWN HALL

Plans for the proposed hall had been inspected by councillors and it was resolved that a letter be forwarded to the. Minister of Internal Affairs through Mr Atmore M.P. asking if a Coronation Grant would be available for the work.

WAGES OF BOROUGH EMPLOYEES

Considerable discussion ensued in regard to the wages of borough employees and it was finally resolved on the motion of Councillor TufTnell that the employees work a 40 hour week and that their wages be brought into line with those of other local bodies in the district.

REPORT REGARDING HOUSING

SURVEY

The committee appointed to report on the Government Housing Survey Scheme recommended that the council apply to be exempted from the provisions of the Act on the grounds that the population of the borough is only 1200 and the necessary expenditure is not warranted. The report was adopted.
